Austin has grown tremendously through the past fifteen the years. So, too, has the size of the downtown crowd pursuing entertainment.
The availability of street parking has declined even as the competition for those spaces has soared.
In addition, the number of canoes, kayaks, and SUPs on Lady Bird Lake is at record levels. On weekend afternoons, it seems that you could walk from one shore of the river to the other, across small watercraft, without getting your feet wet.
All of these factors (and a couple of others determine when workouts can be run).
Currently, workouts are possible* at the below Times
- Monday through Wednesday at 0600 hrs
(organizers – Currently Open ) - Monday through Thursday at 1830 hrs (6:30pm)
(organizers – Justin, Scott, Binh) - Saturday & Sunday at 0630 hrs
(organizers – Binh, ) - Saturday & Sunday at 0830 hrs
(organizers – Justin, Scott, Binh, Jeff, )
*requires the availability of an approved steersperson and minimal crew (four paddlers for the OC-6, three paddlers for the OC-4).
We are fortunate in being able to paddle throughout most of the year. There will be a couple of weeks, in later January or early February, when the temperatures are simply too cold.
Protocol
Unless there is electrical activity (lightning), we paddle in the rain.
If in doubt, check for text messages from Denise, Justin, Mike, Scott, Jeff or Binh.
Paid members should check the TeamSnap sign-ups (availability). Be certain to refresh the page on your browser / phone.
A lot of us drive 30 miles round-trip and there have been team members who routinely drove 100+ miles each way from San Antonio for a workout
If you are going to miss a workout or are going to be late, be a a good teammate and a responsible person.
1) remove your name from the TeamSnap signup (with plenty of advance notice)
2) call or text the others who are signed-up and give them fair warning
If you are going to delayed, please let us know your status at least 15 minutes in advance.
If we know that you will be late, we can always circle back to pick you up. Very few of us carry mobile devices on the water. Provide plenty of advance notice.
